Endings of Different Importance

1) I'm in S16 of Silent Witness now but started the month finishing out the Sam Ryan years before jumping back ahead. (I started watching the show in S8 and did about 5 seasons before going back to the start.)

It was a very different show and felt more like a star vehicle, as she was not only the main character but the early seasons also spent a lot of time on her personal life and family. I was glad when Leo and Harry came along to make it seem more like a team show.

I thought the way her character exited the show was a really well done job even though I had some issues with it. Read more... ) In short, I think many characters would like to have had this kind of ending.

2) Speaking of Silent Witness, I was amused that in the episode with Jodie Comer claiming to be possessed by demons, Tom Ellis turns out to be her priest. Well yeah, you're possessed with Lucifer himself guiding your religious life!

3) Google is quickly taking us to a zero click environment. "In this system, the platform harvests and delivers information without sending the reader to those who actually created it, often at significant cost and always with the intention of serving their own audiences. For premium publishers, it means fewer readers, ad impressions, and subscription conversions. For the open web, it means less discovery, diversity, and accountability in the information ecosystem." Read more... )

4) I was curious about this How Americans Do Laundry survey. I'm sharing it here because I know a lot of people like to know stuff like this for their writing. Read more... )

5) Posted some more trip photos of the Devil's Punchbowl and lake views at [community profile] common_nature.

Misc +++

Man, I have been absolutely flat out lately. Here are some things I've done between the weekend and now:

+ On Saturday, I drove down to Anzac to attend an event. The local pride group was having a ~beach day~ at an outfit that does private lakeside events. It was my first time driving so far - I've never driven outside town, and this place is about 55km away. It's been about 25 years since I was last at Gregoire Lake, and I've never been to Anzac, and I kept thinking I'd get lost (and I did get lost once I actually got to Anzac, but I found the lakeside place eventually!).

+ The beach day itself was nice! The beach wasn't very beach-y, but the weather was good. I'm glad I remembered to bring a towel. I also brought my watercolour paints! And I sat there and painted and chit-chatted with some acquaintances. All in all, it was very nice, and I'm glad that I actually got up the nerve to go, because I'd been kind of 50/50 on it before that.

+ ...Anyway, I feel a lot more confident about my ability to, like, drive outside the city now, even if it was just brief. (And also it gave me some increased appreciation for T-sensei, because he comes all the way from Anzac to teach us, and wtf, that's such a long way to drive, especially in winter.)

+ As for watercolours, doing plein air stuff was fun and I'm so glad that my new palette works well - something with a cover is convenient for that, more portable than what I was using before. I did some works with plain watercolour, and others that also included watercolour pencils and gouache. I think I prefer the ones that include gouache over the plain watercolours - they're more vibrant. Though also I think I have a tendency to dilute too much and work too wet. IDK, I'm going to have to experiment a bit more.

+ On the Sunday I went to a talk about the various transphobic bills that are being implemented by the Alberta government. I took some notes and have some thoughts on it, but I want to make that its own post. Anyway, it was a good talk.

+ Worked a little on my IIBB fic. At this point it's just line editing. There's one separate scene I want to write and possibly post as a DVD extra, but that's unnecessary. Mostly I just reaaaallly want to get the line edits done because that deadline is looming, auuuugh. ...But this fic was written several years ago and I can't read it without thinking "ughhhh". It's pretty decent, but still, ughhhh. (I'm so sick of looking at it.)

+ But speaking of writing, someone recently posted one of the nicest comments I've ever received. It had something about appreciating that I trust the audience to pick up on subtlety. That felt really good.

+ Had my last physio appointment for now. I'm cleared to go back to judo in September. I'm looking forward to starting again, but I'm also going to have to try to take it easy on that arm. ...Honestly, I think last year, I may have been overdoing it. But it isn't so much that I want to do less judo as it is that I want to also have time and energy to do things that are not judo. IDK, going to have to figure out how to balance it better. Three classes per week might be too much for me.

+ Honestly, I've been feeling very flat out all week. It's like every day this week there has been something that needs to be done after work, some kind of chores or favours for other people or appointments or SOMETHING, and I honestly just want to kick back and read a goddamn book. But that will have to wait for a bit. :V Ah, well.

MCU meme

Because why not.

When I drop a fandom, it's over baby. It's stone cold dead. (Not always true but for the purpose of this post let's generalise.) I did enjoy Thunderbolts this year though.

I saw most of these early and at the cinema because I love going to the movies. Less so, these days. But yeah I used to be at the cinema once every few weeks.

More on Smokey

I am unpopular with Smokey.

I took her to the vet today for an x-ray - the appointment was for 09:00, meaning I had to get up at a sparrow’s fart. She didn’t like being put in the carrier.

They were very careful to explain to me that it involved a general anaesthetic and they could not guarantee that Smokey would survive. I said I understood and that at her age (she’s 19) I wouldn’t expect a heroic revival if anything happened.

As you can imagine, I have been on tenterhooks all day.

I got a call at quarter to four to tell me that she was ready to be picked up.

It turned out that the only thing the x-ray showed was swollen lymph nodes. So we are giving her at least a month’s rest from being dragged to the vet, and may then repeat her bloods. Someone on FB asked me if they have checked for pancreatitis, and yes, they have. They are as sure as they can be that it’s not that.

When I got her home, I opened her carrier and she ran up the stairs as if the hounds of hell were at her little furry heels. Poor cat!

Poor me, too. The doors to the poor house gape ever wider. X-raying a cat is not a cheap hobby. Neither are taxi fares x four. I may have to live on cheap biscuits and porridge.

“not funny haha but funny ah I’m in a well!”

Various:

--compression culture is making you stupid and uninteresting (substack post) - an interesting commentary about the trend of summarizing and drilling things down to "five actionable points," etc. Not sure I agree in every context but hey, that's what context is for.

--Went out with some friends recently to try my first ever lobster roll. Yes, I have lived up here for many years, shut up. Excitingly, I have learned a cool fact! Which is that I do not like lobster rolls. A good time was had nonetheless.

--Have had to remind myself once again, as I periodically do, that I am allowed to get into a cool idea for a week and then drop it. I am not obligated to remain fixated on any of the things that I fixate on for three days. Things can be fun and then end.

--My office building does these periodic activities (I want to call them enrichment) where they give out beach towels and sunscreen for the summer, or have a 'make your own spice mix' event, or whatever. No idea why. Anyway, they had one the other day which was labeled "Farmer's Market," which I assumed would be an indoor farmer's... market? But I stuck my head in at the tail end of it to discover that it was actually free veggies, and since this was the end of things they really wanted it all to go away and there were no limits anymore. So I came home with, uh. A lot, but mostly carrots. Next week's dinners will be heavy on carrots. Roasted. Soup. Mmmmmmm.

--Today A took me on a whale watching tour and it was absolutely marvelous. Only one juvenile whale, but he was flopping all around and breaching and doing all the fancy whale stuff. Genuinely thrilling!

--Many other interesting/fun things have happened but if I try to post about them all I will keep writing this entry until eternity.

[Music] Mariel Buckley - Strange Trip Ahead - Upcoming album

Just the other day I was wondering when Mariel Buckley will come out with something new. Looks like she has an album, titled Strange Trip Ahead, that'll be released in October!

Two tracks are up on Bandcamp already, and if this is the vibe for the whole album, then I'm really looking forward to it. It's consistent with her usual style, but new material.

Her sound is unpolished rough-at-the-edges country; it reminds me of the stuff from the '90s and earlier that I grew up with, except also with a vaguely gay vibe. Very nostalgic without actually being from the period.

let it go

Exciting times here this morning.

I had decanted my brew of cold-tea plus plum juice into a plastic bottle after its first ferment (the scobie was raspberry-coloured! I hope it is all right) a few days ago, but there was no room for it in the fridge.

I found myself worrying about whether it would taste good, or vinegary, or outright yucky, so decided to have a little taste. As I loosened the screw top, there was a loud bang, a shriek of outrage from me, and the bottle produced a substantial bright pink fountain of bubbles. Kombucha in its excited state flowed all over the worktop and floor. And my hand hurt from the impact of lid against my palm.

It took a while to clean up. I used the entire teacloth, plus a goodly quantity of kitchen paper, and finished off with the washing-up cloth.

About three quarters of the bottle has gone.... though I am happy to report that the remainder does taste rather nice.

At least I know 'second ferment' is true!

Life, cats

Life somewhat sucks.

I had an appointment with my doctor today. He wanted to talk about my kidneys. It seems they are not behaving as they should, my kidney function is still well below normal.

I’m being taken off my pills for my hemicrania as these damage my kidney function. And he wants urine samples, one tomorrow (looking for blood) and one next week looking for who knows what.

I have to increase my fluid intake. Which isn’t a real hardship, I can do that.

I am concerned about coming off my hemicrania drug as the debilitating pain may (probably will) recur. That was horrible and I ended up being sent to a neurologist.

In other news…

Opal is driving me crazy. I don’t think she has used her litter box at all this week and my hall is decorated with little piles of💩 I can live without that. She’s a real sweetheart, but I don’t need her 💩 everywhere.

I have called the vet to see if they can prescribe her Gabapentin again, as that seemed to help. I have tried various versions of cat attractant for litter trays but none of them have seemed to be effective.

Honestly, FML.

(no subject)

Air quality this weekend was, to quote The Weather Channel, "Atrocious and unsafe". Wow. (It's smoke blowing in from Saskatchewan.) Anyway, I stayed inside for my stat holiday today, which is not how I wanted things to go.

Stuff that I did this past weekend:
+ Went to a coworker's birthday party
+ Went for a coffee meetup organized by the local pride group
+ Did some reading (but not as much as I'd have liked)
+ Hauled out my watercolours and did some paintings
+ Brainstormed some fic concepts (that I don't have time for at the moment but maybe at some future point), specifically some NL/DK/NO and also some NL/NO, the latter will probably require research but we'll see.
+ Had planned to do some writing for IIBB but found myself exhausted. So. That will have to be... later. (I'm in the "I hate this fic" editing stage.)

PIP

I had a phone call from the DWP earlier today, to talk about my ongoing PIP review. We chatted for about an hour, with the annoying outcome that she’s going to refer me to an assessor.

I could totally live without that. When I asked how long it would take an assessor to get in touch, I was told that it could be “months”. Helpfully, I will be paid until a decision is made.
